Aston Knight Solicitors represent a number of patients of spinal surgeon John Bradley Williamson who has practised at Salford Royal Hospital, Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, and Spire Manchester Hospital. He previously served as the president of the British Scoliosis Society, worked as an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons, and chaired the neurosciences division at Salford Royal Hospital.

A report commissioned by The Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust has accused Williamson of having poor surgical techniques, inadequate record-keeping, and ineffective communication with patients and staff.

The published report said:

[Williamson’s] surgical technique was judged to be poor in multiple cases. Issues with screw placement and screws being misplaced were identified in a high number of cases. In a number of cases, surgery was found to be poorly planned and patients suffered high blood loss for the surgery performed. [He] also incorrectly applied paediatric surgical practise and concepts to more complex adult surgical patients.

The investigation highlighted several concerning issues, including:

  • Substandard surgeries performed due to negligence
  • Patients experiencing long-term pain and mobility challenges
  • Higher than expected blood loss during procedures
  • Lack of informed consent from patients prior to surgeries
  • In many cases, the risks listed on consent forms did not accurately reflect those associated with the surgeries
  • Mr. Williamson exhibited “unacceptable and unprofessional behaviour”
  • The review identified “serious and frequently occurring significant professional issues.”

What actions are the NHS and Spire taking regarding patient concerns?

Spire has reached out to all patients whose care is under review, providing them with information on how their treatment with Mr. Williamson will be evaluated.

Dr. Rafik Bedair, Chief Medical Officer of the Northern Care Alliance, stated that all individuals whose care is being reviewed have been contacted.

However, there has not been a complete patient recall, leading Aston Knight Solicitors to believe that more individuals may have suffered due to Mr. Williamson’s negligence and encourages them to seek legal support.

If you were operated on by Mr. Williamson, please contact us to determine your eligibility for a claim. You can call us at 0161 399 1231 or contact us online.
